EVERY NEW JERSEY VETERAN ELIGIBLE FOR DIGNIFIED BURIAL Bill” Coneby wanted to take an afternoon stroll, the weather was balmy and the sun was shining brightly. A perfect day for a scenic, meandering walk. But the strolling destination might be off-putting to some people. It turned out to be a graveyard—a hallowed one at that—but a cemetery located in Arneytown, Burlington County, a half-hour drive from Cherry Hill and well worth the visit, especially for Coneby. Vietnam veteran Bill is the esteemed and longtime Service Officer of Post #372. As such he often deals with sickness and death and on this day he was also paying a special visit to the grave of his father, Glen Coneby, Sr. It’s also the final resting place of hundreds of New Jersey Veterans of the country’s past wars, formally known by its distinguished name: The Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery. In his walking tour of the scenic and spacious, well-kept landscape, Coneby was impressed by the number of Individual Service Monuments that had been erected through the grounds that were dedicated in 1986 by then Governor Thomas H. Kean. Bill took a number of pictures of the special military markers and we area pleased to present some of them here. Each of the Veteran gravesites is uniform in size and spaces are allocated through funeral directors’ requesting such grave space for any deceased New Jersey Vet. Anyone is eligible. Bill, eventually located his father’s gravesite, said a prayer, took a picture and headed back to Post #372 with the comforting knowledge that New Jersey Veterans were not being forgotten. |
