Subject: Boys State 2007
To: "Ernest G. Brosh"
Dear Mr. Brosh and the members of American Legion Post 372,
On behalf of my fellow classmates, I would like to thank the
Legion for sponsoring the statesmen from Cherry Hill HS West at
ALJBS '07. We all had a good time and made many new friends. More
importantly, however, we will carry the lessons we received about
government and politics throughout the rest of our lives. One of
the biggest lessons that the staff and speakers tried to impress
upon us was the importance of getting involved and becoming
invested in everything we do. Without involvement and passion,
nothing would ever get done. Everything is a choice, and it is
truly up to us to make this country stronger and wiser.
Thank you for giving us this inspiring opportunity to learn about
ourselves and about our country.
Sincerely,
Andrew Sturner, Cherry Hill West |

Boys State UPDATE (2/06)
- Boy’s State will commence
Father’s Day, June 14th, 2006. Post #372 expects to have at least 11
delegates along with three alternates attending the Convention!
Last year, two of the alternates were able to attend the annual
convention at Rider University.
Many notables have participated in the Boy’s State Program, an American
Legion tradition bringing young men in from all over the country for a
week-long “Legislative Session.” The delegates ultimately elect a
“President” to lead the “Boy’s State.”
Among the luminaries who have attended the Boy’s State are Al Gore, Dick
Cheney, George Bush and Bill Clinton.
Representatives from more than 70 colleges and universities are in
attendance on graduation day to review the troops.
As usual, we are always on the lookout for charitable persons willing to
help us provide the $185.00 fee it takes to submit each boy’s
application.
If you are interested in learning more about this tax-deductible gift,
please call me at the Post as we try to perpetuate our type of
government through these fine young men.
Thank You!
Ernie Brosh
Vice Commander

- BOYS STATE INFORMATION (1/06)
-
- I have often been
asked to briefly explain the Boys State program. For me to do so, albeit
briefly, would require far more space than the confines of this
newsletter. Here goes.
- The concept of Boys
State began in 1935. At that time the Communist Party was promoting a
project called “Young Pioneer Camps”, meant to show the uselessness of
Democracy and advocate the virtues of the Communist system. We had to
counteract and the Illinois Department of The American Legion approved a
program that was the brainchild of Mr. Hayes Kennedy a Professor at the
Loyola University School of Law in Chicago. The program quickly spread to
Legion Departments across the country. Today, there is a Boys State
program in 49 states and the District of Columbia.
- Candidates for Boys
State must be in the 11th grade of High School, with at least
one semester left. The boys are selected by counselors and/or teachers at
their schools and interviewed by the Post boys State Chairman and his
staff. The boys that make it past the Post committee are then invited to
attend Rider University in Lawrenceville, New Jersey with registration
beginning at 8:30 A.M. on Sunday (Father’s Day). Approximately 900 boys
will study the form of government that made our country what it is today
and they will run for various political offices. Two outstanding citizens
of Jersey Boys’ State are elected as US Senators and awarded a trip to
Washington, D.C. to represent New Jersey in the week long American Legion
Boys’ Nation program which draws together representatives from across the
country to experience and learn the workings of Government at a national
level.
- The program at this
point will culminate with the election of the President of Boys’ Nation.
The Nation program is conducted at Marymount College, Arlington, Virginia.
- The cost per delegate
for this 61st convention at Rider University is $185.00 per
boy. This includes just about everything the boy will need except for
incidentals. The boys will be away from home, some of them for the first
time, a microcosm of basic military life. The program is meant to educate
and perpetuate our form of government. It is a privilege and an honor to
be selected and to complete this program.
- The Boys State
Chairman of each Post will work closely and coordinate activities of each
boy under his jurisdiction. If you would like to sponsor a boy you can do
so by contacting me at the Post. 856-665-3889.
- Sincerely,
- Ernest Brosh
- Vice Commander/Boys
State Chairman
