World War II reminiscences are always fascinating and
sometimes--despite the
circumstances, -- humorous. Here’s a tale from Post Member George Gelernt
that colorfully illustrates that observation…
SALUTE NOT NEEDED!
“I was with the 28th Infantry and my company was walking around in a town
(St. George/ I believe) after the Germans had fled from the town. All of a
sudden mortar rounds started to come in on us and we ran like hell for
whatever cover we could find.
Running hard, I ran right into a one-star general who must have weighed
well over two hundred pounds and although I was a skinny 130, I knocked
him right to the ground. Out of habit, though I hadn't seen a general
since training camp in the USA, and startled, I saluted as I helped him to
his feet. He either said,” Run soldier, don't salute" or he said "Run
stupid, don't salute". I prefer to remember the first one.
Cordially,
George Gelernt
