SCHOOL BELLS RING AGAIN FOR
FIVE POST 372 VETERANS
FIVE seasoned ex-GIs returned to the fifth grade class once again but this
time as “hero’s” and “military idols” to dozens of boys and girls
attending Cherry Hill’s Johnson Elementary School on Kresson Road during a
holiday season visit.
Actually, the invitation came from Fifth Grade Teacher Debra Miller, who
wanted her students to understand what the Veterans Day holiday and
celebration really meant.
The special Veteran’s Day assembly was a noble proposition and Post #372
was invited to showcase its best Vets. Which we did. And the kids loved
it!
Among the volunteers, Air Force representatives Ernie Brosh, Ray Rubel and
Chester Malick were joined by Marine Vet, Phil Atkinson and Army Vet Jim
Gallagher. The five were introduced and praised for their military
accomplishments by N.J.State Sen. John Adler, who introduced each of the
men to the full student assembly.
Afterwards, the men broke into teams of VIP visitors to separate fifth
grade classes completing the hour-long “personal history” narrative with
literally flying colors.
Each told of personal reminisces and short takes on what it was like to
serve during war and peacetime conditions and what it means to be a Vet.
In a sincere, personal thank you note to each of the men Mrs. Miller also
forwarded signed grateful comments and childlike drawings from the 60 some
students with flattering remarks for each of the Post foursome.
Hopefully, the kids went home with a clear and better understanding of
what it means to be a “Veteran…”
