Cherry Hill American Legion Post 372 Wins

2009 Joel Stephens Championship Invitational Tournament

MANSFIELD, Pa. – In what proved to be one of the most thrilling championship games in Joel Stephens Invitational history, Cherry Hill rallied to earn an 8-7 victory over Williamsport in extra innings Sunday at Shaute Field at the University of Mansfield.

Williamsport led 6-3 going into the bottom of the seventh inning, but Cherry Hill scored three runs to tie the game and force extra innings. Williamsport took the edge again, plating one run in the top of the eighth inning, but Cherry Hill rallied with two runs in the bottom of the inning to seal the come-from-behind win.

Joe Cona was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the eighth and was thrown out when Dante Cassano reached base on a fielder’s choice. After C.J. Szymczak lined out to short, Juan Torres earned a pinch-hit  walk to bring up Pat Moran. With the count at two balls and one strike, Moran ripped a base hit to Right Center plating Cassano with the tying run and Torres with the winning run.

Ryan Martin was credited with the win on the mound, after throwing the final inning.

Moran had four RBIs in the game to lead Cherry Hill. Sean Gold had two hits and two RBIs and was joined by Joe Cona with one RBI.

Sean Gold and Ryan Martin were named to the All-Tournament team from Cherry Hill.  Pat Moran was named the tournament MVP, with teammate Matt Speckmann earning the most outstanding infielder and Joe Cona earning the most outstanding outfielder.

The Joel Stephens Invitational Tournament is one of the most prestigious American Legion Baseball Tournaments on the East Coast. All proceeds are contributed to non-profit organizations and foundations dedicated to assisting children and families of children who have cancer or a serious illness.

The senior team placed third in the league, had an outstanding outing in the Mansfield University July 4th tournament and won 2 games in the State Tournament falling just short of qualifying for the State Finals. Ten of our graduating players are off to play baseball at college. Several were aggressively recruited by college coaches and will receive a baseball scholarship or financial aid due to their baseball abilities. We are very proud of the role our program played in helping these young men get to the “next level”

In 2008, two of our graduating players received Post 372 scholarships. Each Scholarship is worth $1000 and will be paid directly to their college. Michael Cox was the winner of the John R. Huhn III Memorial Scholarship. He is attending Rowan University and is a pitcher on the Rowan Baseball Team. Shaune Collins, our catcher for the last 2 years, is the winner of the Thomas Goldy Sr. Memorial Scholarship. He was highly recruited by the Stockton baseball coach and will attend Stockton University.

Our Freshman Team won the New Jersey State Championship in their age division. The team is coached by Shaun Gismonde – a teacher and baseball coach at Cherokee High School. Shaun is a graduate of Cherry West High School and played Post 372 in 1998 and 1999. This is the 2nd year in a row that our program has produced a State Championship. Last year our Junior Team won the NJ State Championship. We are looking forward to the 2009 season!!!
