One of his high school teachers
Louisa, VA
I was Garry's senior US Government teacher at Wilson Memorial High School. Garry was raised in TX, so he was affectionately called "Tex" by everyone. We had him less than two years, but he was a friend to everyone, especially the girls. He was such a handsome, well dressed guy who had personality and a big smile. He was a good student and school citizen. He had dreams of running his own automotive business. I saw him for the last time in June 1965, two weeks after graduation when I stopped at his and a friend's newly opened gas station near Waynesboro, VA. It was opening day and both boys were all smiles and graciousness, they were happy. I filled my tank, paid Garry and wished him success. I left for an overseas assignment one week later. When I returned to the States two years later, I was told of Garry's death in Nam. I have never gotten over it. Garry, I think of you often, what a waste. But I am told you did it your way and I'm terribly proud of you. May God bless you in His presence for eternity. You'll never be forgotten by those who loved you and respected you. I visited you in DC last Oct. 16th. I shall never forget how I felt when I touched your name- it was as if I had touched something holy. Thank you for your ultimate sacrifice in the name of our country. You are still one fine human!
